The Prime Minister shines a light on Warm Welcome Spaces

Last year, we had the honour of taking Andy Burnham, in his role as Greater Manchester Mayor, and our Ambassador Gaby Roslin, to visit Longsight Library and Learning Centre Warm Welcome Space in Manchester.

Following his recent appointment as Prime Minister, we wrote to the Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham MP, to congratulate him, and we highlighted the fantastic contribution of Warm Welcome spaces to communities across the UK. We were thrilled to read the Prime Minister’s kind reply, one that recognises the importance of Warm Welcome Spaces and the people who bring them to life.

Places of Dignity and Connection

This recognition belongs to everyone who makes Warm Welcome possible, so we are delighted to be able to share the Prime Minister’s letter for all spaces and guests to read and take heart in. His message highlights the vital role of libraries, community centres, cafes, faith spaces and local voluntary groups in creating places of connection, dignity and support across the UK.

This recognition belongs to everyone who makes Warm Welcome possible. From those who run and volunteer in Spaces to the partners, supporters and communities behind the movement, you have helped build something truly special.

The Prime Minister’s letter to the Warm Welcome Campaign said:

“I warmly remember my visit to Longsight Library and Learning Centre with Gaby Roslin, and I saw there what I have always believed to be true: that places which hold communities together are often places closest to people’s daily lives.”

Talking about the Warm Welcome’s work and the Greater Manchester Live Well Programme, the Prime Minister added: 

“…the principle behind this work is one I strongly support: that better health and wellbeing will only be achieved if we put more power, resource and trust into the hands of communities themselves.”

“Libraries, community centres, faith spaces and local voluntary groups are not optional extras... they are part of the social infrastructure that gives people dignity and support when they most need it. The growth of Warm Welcome into a UK-wide network of more than 6,000 spaces is therefore a powerful testament to the people and places-driven leadership this country needs. Ultimately for me, my premiership is about putting people and communities closer to the heart of decision-making and to ensure this is equally happening right across government.”

The Prime Minister also shared his support for our 100% Pledge and plans for Warm Welcome Week 2027.

“I welcome your ambitions for Warm Welcome Week and the 100% Pledge. The idea that everyone should live within 30 minutes of a welcoming community space is clear, practical and rooted in the kind of country we should be trying to build.”

We’re so grateful to the Prime Minister for his support and for recognising the difference being made by Warm Welcome Space every day. Thank you for supporting us as Mayor, and now as Prime Minister.
