Cornerstone Benwell in Newcastle-upon-Tyne created an inspiring initiative within their Warm Welcome Space, called the Kindful Kitchen Cookbook project. The idea brings together women from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds who may otherwise feel isolated or disconnected from the community. Through weekly gatherings, participants share traditional recipes, stories, and cultural experiences connected to food.
The project creates a welcoming and supportive environment where women can connect, learn from one another and celebrate their heritage. It encourages confidence and leadership by giving each participant the opportunity to present a recipe from their culture and lead discussions around food, traditions and healthy adaptations.
By combining community, culture and wellbeing, Cornerstone Benwell has transformed their warm space into more than just a place to stay warm. It has become a place where people feel valued, heard and empowered. The initiative is also working towards producing a community cookbook featuring the recipes and personal stories of the women involved, celebrating the diversity and strength of the local community.
The Kindful Kitchen Cookbook project has made a meaningful difference to both participants and the wider community. Many of the women involved face challenges such as poverty, social isolation or language barriers. The project creates a safe and welcoming space where they can build friendships, feel supported and develop a stronger sense of belonging.
By sharing food and stories, participants gain confidence and pride in their cultural heritage. They also develop practical cooking skills and learn ways to prepare healthier meals for themselves and their families. The take home ingredient packs help families practice what they have learned and bring the experience into their homes.
The project also strengthens the wider community by encouraging cultural understanding and connection between people from different backgrounds. Through the creation of the community cookbook, these voices and stories will be celebrated and shared more widely, leaving a lasting legacy of the warm space and the people who made it special.
One of the most powerful aspects of the Kindful Kitchen Cookbook project is the way each session is led by one of the participants. During these weekly gatherings, a woman from the group shares a recipe that is meaningful to her and explains the story behind it, whether it comes from her childhood, her family traditions or her cultural heritage.
The group then prepares the recipe after discussing ways to adapt it for healthier eating or different dietary needs. This creates a supportive space where everyone can contribute ideas and learn from each other. At the end of the session, each participant receives a bag of ingredients so they can cook the dish again at home with their families.
Women who may have initially felt shy or isolated gain confidence as they share their culture and see others appreciate their knowledge and traditions. Moments like these bring people together in a powerful way.
