Mike and Bob may have started out on opposite sides of Manchester’s famous football divide, but their friendship shows that the things that bring people together matter far more than the teams they support.

Bob has supported Manchester City for as long as he can remember, while Mike has always been a devoted Manchester United fan. But when the pair met through the Men's Brew Crew at Cosy Cafe, football quickly took a back seat. Instead, they discovered something far more important: a friendship built on shared experiences, kindness and the comfort of having someone by your side when life feels difficult.

Mike joined the Men's Brew Crew in early 2025 after losing his wife. Grieving and struggling to navigate daily life, he was looking for connection and support during one of the hardest times he had faced.

Through the group, he met Bob, who had also been through the loss of his wife a year earlier. Understanding the challenges that come with grief, Bob offered Mike the empathy and support he needed. Their friendship helped Mike rebuild his confidence and reconnect with those around him.

Mike became a regular at the community cafe and rediscovered a sense of purpose through volunteering in the community garden.

As Mike puts it: “I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found the Brew Crew and Bob.”

Over time, their friendship became a source of support for both of them. While Bob was there for Mike during a painful period of grief, Mike has been there for Bob in practical ways. Because Bob experiences mobility issues, Mike makes sure he can attend the Brew Crew every week by picking him up and driving him to the group.

When Bob recently underwent an operation and was unable to attend in person, Mike continued to look out for him, arranging for a food parcel to be delivered to his door every week throughout his recovery.

Their friendship shows that support is never just one way. The Men's Brew Crew creates a space where people can find help, but also discover that they have something valuable to offer others. Mike and Bob’s story shows how connection and friendship can grow through shared experiences and small acts of kindness.

Today, Mike continues to volunteer in the community garden, while he and Bob remain part of the Men's Brew Crew, supporting one another and others who attend the group.

Their journey from grief and isolation to friendship and renewed purpose shows that the Men's Brew Crew offers much more than a cup of coffee. It creates a place where people can find connection, support and a sense of belonging, and where friendships can grow in the moments when they are needed most.

From two people on opposite sides of Manchester’s football rivalry to friends who support one another through life’s challenges, Mike and Bob’s story is a powerful reminder that kindness and compassion can bring people together, even when they are cheering for different teams.

The Cosy Cafe where Mike and Bob meet was shortlisted for the Unlikely Friendships Award at the Warm Welcome Awards in June.
